To School Lunch or not to School Lunch

This was a simple decision for my husband and I. Whilst free school meals are offered to all primary school children in our area, we are a family who like to cook from scratch. We make our own sauces, make our own soups and like to keep track of our children’s nutritional in take. I’m overweight and want better health for my children, so I don’t mind getting up early to make lunch. I also quite like the idea of knowing what I sent him to school with and seeing the quantity eaten when he returns.

The Chosen Lunch Bag

We allowed T to pick himself a lunch bag. What he originally asked for isn’t quite what he got. He did ask for, and I quote “A unicorn bag with rainbow hair and a glittery horn”. Skip Hop have a Unicorn bag but apparently a unicorn without a rainbow maine just won’t do at all! We allowed him to choose at first, but he just couldn’t make up his mind and I just wanted him to go to bed. With the choice of the Fox or the Chameleon bag he eventually picked one.

The insulated lunch bag is phthalate-free and big enough to fit his lunch in and small enough for him to be able to carry.

Klean Kanteen Insulated Container

I invested in the 16oz Klean Kanteen Insulated Container and the Spork from Babipur for T’s lunch. The container is big, however I’d rather provide too much food than too little. The Klean Kanteen container is made with safe eco materials, is lead, BPA and phthalate free.

I have batch cooked some meals and frozen them so I have back up for the “late” days, but so far I’ve quite enjoyed getting up in the morning and cooking a nice, hot fresh meal. Generally T and his siblings sit and eat breakfast with daddy while I prepare a healthy lunch. So far I’ve cooked him roast chicken dinner, vegetable curry, salmon pasta and chicken chow-mein and so far no smells have been retained.

Klean Kanteen Water Bottle

I think it’s really good that most school’s these days allow the children to have a water bottle with them in the classroom; watering the children frequently will support development and growth.

Like the Klean Kanteen Container the bottles are earth friendly, made with eco materials, lead, BPA and phthalate free. We have had Klean Kanteen bottles from Babipur for years, they’re strong and we haven’t had to replace any of them. They have a few dents and scratches, some worse than others, but they still do a grand job.
